A TOUCHING RETURN TO PIETRALATA
After 44 years, Albino Bernardini, so-called the Pietralata School Teacher has returned to the school where he started to teach in 1960. A welcome party in his honour took place on May 29, 2004. The Rome City Council together with the Istituto Comprensivo Statale “Giorgio Perlasca” at Pietralata hosted the event.
To warmly welcome Albino the teachers, pupils and their families attended. The Mayor of Rome Walter Veltroni as well as other Roman politicians presided over the event. Moreover a few personalities of the school circle also appeared. The school courtyard was indeed crowded. Before the event started, Albino gave his former six pupils, now all on their fifties, a very warm embrace. This poignant act truly stirred the crowd.
Following the addresses given by the various personalities, the Mayor of Rome highlighted the work and the public spirit of the Bernardini’s. His son Francesco, spoke on behalf of his brother Ivan and his sister Giulia and their respective families, Francesco read his father’s thank you letter to the audience.
“I heartily wish to thank both the Pietralata borough and its people for supporting me on all occasions and giving me the chance to write my very first book about the school world. I am so happy to be here again with all of you 44 years after. Also I have been extremely pleased to embrace these six once-children, who have grown to successful adulthood". These were Albino’s concluding words.
